We will begin the 2021-22 school year with the traditional model of in-person instruction under TIER 1. However, while developing the Ladue School District’s Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services plan, it was essential for the district to outline plans for all situations that may arise.
Public Input Process
As mentioned in the opening letter, we are currently planning to reopen in person. However, we do recognize the unique needs of our diverse student population. We surveyed our families throughout the 2020-21 school year on the district’s return to learn plans as we re-entered the classrooms. At the close of the school year we once again surveyed the families who remained in the virtual environment during 2020-21 school year, the majority of this population chose to return to in-person learning; however, for those who wish to remain in a virtual option, we created the Ladue Online Academy (LOA). After gaining feedback from parents during the summer, the enrollment numbers for minimum class sizes in the LOA program dropped below what is possible for us to offer a Ladue teacher at any grade level to support this program.
Therefore, for families that would still like to remain virtual, there are a few options for your child.

The district may transition on an as-needed basis at any point if directed by federal or local government and the CDC or St. Louis County Department of Public Health if the situation with COVID-19 should change. Nonetheless, we are prepared for any tier and will inform parents if/when necessary to ensure the continuity of services are in place. The options outlined below will prepare our district for avoiding any interruptions in instruction due to COVID. We will review our plan every six months or more often if needed, in order to respond to changing situations. (The Ladue Early Childhood Center has established building-specific plans for reentry.)
Option 1 | Tier 1 | Traditional Model or Virtual Learning Option
Components of the Traditional Model
- In K-5 classrooms, every effort will be made to maintain cohort groups. A cohort group is a group of people who have been within their 6-foot perimeter and are the people they interact with the most. Children will remain in one classroom for learning as well as lunch. There will be time for students to use the restroom, wash hands regularly and be outside with peers in their cohort. Elective and special area teachers will come into the classrooms rather than having students travel to the elective classrooms.
- Students in grades 6-8 will follow their normal schedule but efforts will be made to limit the amount of interaction between students, including staggered passing times, minimizing the amount of daily passing (block schedule), significantly reducing the number of students in the cafeteria and utilizing larger spaces throughout the schools to spread students out.
- Students in grades 9-12 will follow their normal schedule but efforts will be made to limit the amount of interaction between students, including following a block schedule, minimizing the number of students in the cafeteria and utilizing larger spaces throughout the schools to spread students out.
- Classroom protocols will include assigned seating and other measures to minimize contact.
- Materials and supplies will be wiped down between classes or will be individualized where possible.
- Every effort will be made to provide support for students who need extra intervention within the classroom space. In the event these supports will be provided in an alternative location or outside of the typical cohort, face coverings will be required and social distancing will be followed.
- Schools will make reasonable best efforts to minimize risk. However, attending school in-person will introduce a greater risk of exposure.
Tier 2 | Hybrid Model (traditional and e-learning)
- Students will be divided into two groups, based on alphabetical order by last name to determine their attendance schedule. Schools will work to ensure that students in a family with different last names will attend school on the same schedule.
- Additional considerations will be given to meeting the various learning needs of all student populations.
- Every week, students will attend school in-person for two days and work on assignments and activities given by their teacher(s) from home for three days.
- Students who receive additional support in Special Education, English as a Second Language, reading or math, as well as students who may need additional help with a course or have social, emotional or behavioral needs may attend in person on Monday for a shortened day.
- Teachers will hold office hours and/or meet with small groups of students virtually on Mondays.
- Please note, based on the different structures of various grade levels, it may be possible that not every grade or level may be on the same tier at the same time.
- Grades will be recorded and documented in the same format as previous years regardless of the tier.
Tier 3 | Full E-learning for All Students
- If the district should have to transition to Tier 3, teachers will have consistent contact with students. Students will be held accountable for their work and regular feedback will be provided.
- Students will follow a consistent schedule/routine each week that includes regular live contact with teachers.
- Teachers will provide instructional resources and materials through digital learning means using the following methods:
- Grades K-2: Seesaw
- Grades 3-12: Google Classroom
- Should the need arise to transition to full e-learning for all, students who had been attending in-person will continue e-learning with their classroom teacher(s). Students utilizing the Virtual Learning option will continue with their virtual classroom.
